Is there an exemption list for pistols that fail the military characteristic test?

i shoot in many NY pistol leagues and matches and want to make sure I don't
run afoul of any laws. My target pistols have magazines that attach outside of the grip.

If you have a NYS pistol permit and the gun in question is listed on your permit, you should be good to go. The new law classifies your gun as an assault weapon. This type of pistol can no longer be sold in NYS.
You are allowed to keep the pistol if you owned it prior to the signing of the new law, but because it is now classified as an assault weapon it must be registered, which it already is if you have said NYS pistol permit.

Having said all that, I see your location is listed as Canada so it would seem that you don't qualify for a NYS pistol permit. Out of curiosity, how do you legally shoot a pistol in NY?

I do not believe registering it on your pistol permit counts as registering it as an assault weapon. It still needs to go through the new system which includes a new background check by the state police. Please do not believe that you are exempt because your pistol is already registered.

I am able to bring my firearms into the United States with an approved Form 6 NIA from the BATF for the purpose of target shooting competitions. Now since all the clubs I shoot at are in NY, that may be a problem.

Since I have been researching this, I have found that California has the same law but they also specifically name firearms that are exempt.

I shoot a Walther GSP in .22 and .32 by the way

I suspected there was some sort of international competition clause that allowed you to bring a pistol to the states, but knowing how anal New York is about pistols, I'm a bit surprised it is allowed in THIS state.

I wish I had some sort of constructive feedback for you, but I've got no clue. Your best bet is to contact the NY State Police and ask them.

He probably has something like a Hammerli or Walther GSP.
Probably has a scary assault compensator also.

Wow, can you imagine guns like that being seized at the border? Stupid!
