Default Making My NJ compliant AR-15 NY compliant ??

Hi everyone! Brand new to the site,,Sorry if this question is redundant but I cant seem to find out any true answers,,

I live in NJ and own a NJ compliant AR-15 made by Windham Weaponry , I hunt and shoot in NY at a private hunting club in Ulster County,, My questions are :

    1) how do I make my AR-15 NY compliant ?

    2) do I need to register this rifle in NY ?

    3) who can I contact for these answers ?

This AR-15 does have a flash hider and a pistol grip, Has a pinned stock and a 5 round Mag. ,,( No bayonet lug)

    Thanks again for your help!

Your AR is legal like all the ARs legally purchased and owned by legit firearm owners. They were legal before and they will continue to be legal. Now about making that compliant with the stupid NY statutes some folks are going w/o a muzzle device and one of those gripless exile or torsten stocks.
Some others are doing the magazine fixed. Some others are doing nothing depending on where you live and local sheriff's standing.
If you register the AR you do not have to do anything. The problem is registration probably means later confiscation. That is what history has showed us. You can contact nys police but depending on who do you talk to you might get different answers.
Might want to contact the sheriff in the county where you are going to be using the firearm too.
I am not a lawyer so seek further advice but even senior lawyers have not been able to understand many parts of the law.

Welcome to the site. Search is your friend. There are many threads on this site that go through making an AR NY unSAFE Act compliant. Not sure anyone can give you a definitive answer on bringing one in from NJ. May be best to leave it at home unless you feel like being a test case.

That is a slippery slope. In it's current form you cannot bring that rifle into NY, if it's registered in NY you must leave it in NY. To make it compliant, the pistol grip and flash hider must go. WELCOME.

Move somewhere between 500-700 miles straight south and you'll be good.

It has to be made NY compliant or it can't come into NY at all. #1-You can make the mag non detachable with a 10rd or less mag and keep the other features you have. #2-You can keep the mag detachable still 10rd or under and remove the muzzle device and Tac weld a thread protector on(can't have a muzzle device or threads). Remove the pistol grip and replace with a compliant non pistol grip or stock. You can't register in NY unless your a resident. You can only load 7rds in the mag unless at a range or event then you can load 10.

Nobody can tell you. The law was written to discourage all guns, because alot is illegal now but specifics are really hard to find. Its vague. Intentionally vague.

Don't modify your gun to be complacent here. First off, if you play by their unconstituional laws, they win. Second, its probably easier to find hunting land in PA, or use a different rifle.

Disable the gas system. No longer semi-auto. Non-issue. I say this after reading the NY State Trooper guidelines.

    A straight pull? Hmmm.

I wonder if that would work legally. Does it have to be permanent?

No way in hell am I disfiguring a bunch of pre-ban Colts with weird grips and grinding off their barrel threads and tossing the flash supressors. Ain't happening.

Adjustable gas block can cut off the gas to the BCG. Then just epoxy the set screw to make it "permanent". Or do the same, and remove the gas tube when you replace the gas block (even using a "fake" one with no gas passageway would work).

I'm planning on something similar for my long-range rifle, I dont need to shoot that fast, and pulling the charging handle would be ok.

No muzzle device or pistol grip and you should be good to go. I hate posting in these threads. So depressing that we're stuck with this ****.

He's not a NY resident and therefore can't register it.

Use the ar-15 spur or similar grip and you would have to tac weld a thread protector over the barrell threads...

    Simple answer.
If it meets the AW definition you can not bring it to NY.

You need to modify it if you want to bring it here. There are plenty of posts here about how to do it.

    The 3 options are:

    1. Magazine = can't be assault weapon if magazine doesn't detach
    2. Gas system = can't be AW if it isn't semi auto
    3. Feature = can't be an assault weapon if it doesn't have the features described in the law.

Registration is NOT an option for you.

Hehe, that was funny in a gallows humor kind of way. Welcome to NY! You're under arrest.

Your windham has a muzzle comp which is a no go, do the "cut and split method" to remove it and put on a thread protector in its place then replace the grip with a hammer head from exile. Total cost about $40.00 and your good to go welcome to new york, when we give this law a dirt nap you can put it back the way is was.

LOL, don't call Andy, he'll just tell you to drop it off to Albany, so it can be burned. Can't have those baby-killin' weapons in the hands of responsible people, now, can we?

I was just thinking of going with the thread protector, then the AR-15 should be NY safe compliant ,, cause I'm still left with :

    (1) the pistol grip
    (2) the removable mag 5-7 round of course

that should just about do it, unless im missing something ??

well see how far I get tomorrow ,gonna make some more calls
