My brother wants to buy his first .22

He doesn't have the extra $70 for a 10/22. What one would you go with if you had the choice? The difference locally is $10.

Marlin 795. It is VERY accurate and cheap. You can get Ramline stocks for it as others as well. Also, the barrel on the 795 is a little thicker than the Savage 64. When I think of semi-auto's, Savage's do not come to mind. I leave them for the bolt actions.

Cheapest 10-22 I can find locally is $220 (basic wood), bass pro has the deluxe in wood for $240, and dicks has a stainless for $260.

The 2 guns in question are 140-160 depending on who is selling them (around here)

I work at dicks and as you know we sell the 10/22, 795, and the 64. Personally i wouldnt buy a 64 if you gave it to me for $50. If you cant wait and save the money for the 10/22 i would get the 795. Like i said i have both and they are great. But the action and feel of the 10/22 is amazing, plus the amount of aftermarket goodies is endless.

I love my savage 64.. just broke the 1750 rnd mark..... so long as you keep her clean she runs flawlessly.. and i am very impressed with the accurracy at range with a 4x32 nikon on it...

it did take a while to break in especially the magazine.. but heck i got mine for $120 at Herb Philipsons. and she has been worth every penny...

granted you dont have the customization of the ruger or the possibility of prebans... but heck how much do you want to sink into regular old .22lr anyway? also when i was shopping i had a hard time finding the prebans which pushed me in the dirrection on the savage and i couldnt be happier.

also the money saved instead of getting the ruger you can put into 3 or 4 mags for the savage at 13-16.$ a piece

I have a Savage 64, I like it, it shoots just fine, kind of a pain to clean I will admit but for a first gun it should be, it'll teach him to clean everything else thoroughly. As for the Ruger I know I'll probably get flamed for this but he backed the AWB and ever since I found that out I'm not sure if I would wanna buy a Ruger, despite the firearms they make that I would love to own (10/22, Mini 14, and various pistols), but the quality is undeniable, so if he really can't wait for the extra 70 bucks I vote Savage 64, I know someone who has a Marlin .22, and while it works just fine as well there is just something about the savage that I like better. Whatever you choose, post pictures and tell us how you like it :)

I've picked up a basic wood stock 10/22 from Dicks for $199. I'd look to see if there are any sales on the way and look for the 10/22 or do what I did, go to Dicks and look at the gun, say to the nice guy working, hey I've seen this on sale for $199, i've bought a couple guns here before is there any way you can hook me up with the normal sale price. They gave me the deal......But if you really are stuck with those 2, I'd go savage I love my MKII.

Even when I purchased my shotgun at dicks on sale ($20 off their norm price), the basic wood 10-22 still would have been $210 (on sale $10 off).

He already has to wait till the start of next month just to get this one. Either way we will report back on how it is.

Myself on the other hand, I plan to snag some form of 10-22 by September (leaning deluxe model as it didn't feel as fat ass as the standard or stainless and I like the look of that gun without the barrel band).

I love my savage mark 2 rifle as well. I held that one and the marlin and the savage bolt felt nicer in my hands than the marlin did. But I didn't look at to many semis when I bought my bolt .22.

All in all it really depends what he is planning on doing with the gun, and which feels better to him. I "needed" a 10/22 and the cheapest model they had because the only parts I kept upon walking in the front door with the gun were the receiver and bolt. I was building a bench .22 for my wife and the cheapest 10/22 avaliable was the best option for me....Just plinking? Hunting? Adding a bunch of parts eventually?...Pick each up, see which "points and shoots" better, controls feel better. The majority of guns now a days will yeild positive results with a good shooter and the right ammo to the gun. There is always a lemon, and there are always people whom will say the gun is terrible.

It will be only for plinking in his case, that much I'm sure.

I'm actually leaning back toward the 795 for him. I'm reading that the 795 has a thicker barrel and the action of a model 60?

I guess I'll have to go look at a 60 and a 795 side by side. I've also read/heard of the magazine being on/off reliable in a 64.

Savage 64 all day. There's different flavors of it. I have one an d love it. I held the Marlin it my hands, it is crazy small and feels like a damn toy. Go with the Savage they are so underrated as a company and make great guns.

I've had the marlin and the savage. Loved the marlin. The savage was the worst firearm I have ever owned. It was basically a single shot. But in the long run I have neither now. I currently own two 10/22s and miss neither.

He bought the 795 today. The barrel was noticeably thicker, the stock was checkered, and the mag release was also considerably better than the nonsense savage decided to go with. The only thing that seemed nicer was the laminate stock (wood) on the 64. The price was $10 more than the savage, so the cost was negligible.

The bolt last shot hold open seems pretty slick as well. We haven't shot it yet, the plan is for Tuesday.
