    Default Reasons for concealed carry

    Hi Everyone,
I know this has been beaten to death, but...

My wife and I are applying for pistol permits in Oswego county. I know you have to show proper cause for an unrestricted license, so I have been thinking about why I want to carry in the first place. This is what I have come up with.

    1. An uptick in crime. In the last two months in the tiny town I live in our one all night gas station was robbed, I believe at gun point, and a meth lab was busted. We have lived here over 7 years with nothing like this happening.

    2. I have a rather large, young family. We have 5 kids, all under the age of 11, and one on the way. Having a family this size means whenever we go anywhere, we are kind of a large, lumbering mass. If we ever ran into trouble, there would be virtually no situation where we could run or hide. There are just too many of us, and most of them are very small.

I know that number one has probably been used before, but number 2 is probably not common at all, considering families are usually not this big anymore.

As an aside, I believe it is my job and duty to protect my family, not the governments. But I know that is not proper cause either.
So any thoughts-do you think number 2 would qualify as proper cause? I know that the judge is the final authority, just wondering what you guys thought.

I was told by a NYS Judge to use this reason...

"To carry a pistol and be in full compliance with the law"..

I was told if you put down things like protection, self defense, ect.. When/if something does eventually happen where you need to use it, the idiots in NY state can go back to your application and basically use it against you.

If my "proper cause" gets rejected can I apply for a target/hunting permit and than switch it over after a few years or will being rejected hurt my cause?

Yes, if you get turned down on unrestricted, you'll get T&H, or something like that. After a bit of time, apply for an upgrade. In Erie county it's usually a year or so. It can't hurt to get additional training during that time.

They should just have a multiple choice list of reasons, and you circle some.

People are always asking what reasons to put haha, most are common sense. I'm sure they see the same wording all the time, after people are coached on what to write.

    Silly silly.

They can mix in tricks! Just like an exam of sorts.

    A) Self defense - Personal Protection!
    B) Target / Sport
    C) Getting rid of wife / girlfriend - by way of buying too many firearms!
    D) Hunting bear
    E) Want to feel like secret agent

Use the term "personal protection", rather than self defense. Pistol offices seem to like that term better.

I'm not married. Just was a hypothetical! And get rid of your wife / girlfriend by buying lots and lots of firearms, that they would just leave you of course.

And I work at UPS. Why do you ask?

I just put hunting, target shooting, and collecting on my application. Hunting will usually score you an unrestricted because you can hunt basically anywhere and you may be carrying the pistol on you to and from the hunting site, that is what the pistol permit clerk told me anyway. I avoided anything about using it on other people entirely, I got an unrestricted permit and I'm all set now anyway.

I don't know if EFed was asking DrgnFly or me where we worked, but I work on computers in the public school system, and my wife is a stay at home home schooling mom. Yes, her life is much busier than mine!

Sorry I was not clear, I was asking the original poster because what he does for a living could factor in for the reason(s) in needing/wanting an unrestricted lic. and by the way I love my ups guy he delivers me all my goodies !!!

I dont think working at a school at this time can help with the unrestricted lic. since they are still gun free zones as far as I know. When my wife applied for her lic the investigator told her to request the unrestricted because of what she does for work. Also he told her to put down "for self defense within the law" as one of the many reasons we were able to come up with due to her line of work.

This is the reason I gave: To be able to protect my family, my property and myself should that ever be needed.

Although some people think there is a reason to further explain, there is not. No more explanations needed.
It is not up to you to demonstrate why you need a firearm, it is up to them to demonstrate, and have a pretty good darn reason why, you should not have that permit.

I think it is important in your interview show that you are a responsible person, that you have a safe, that you are planning on going to training by a professional and are proficient and safe with your firearm.

Nothing else. It is quite simple.

If you put down "Hunting" -- make sure you have a license, or at least your Hunter's ed card, they may ask to see it.

Some people I know In Oswego tried using personal protection and protection of family, and still were restricted. One reason I'm glad I left the county.
    Good luck either way

My dad, my bro, and I all got ours a the same time and we all put "hunting, and competition shooting" on oura and we got unrestricted permits. That was in allegany county. They actually like giving out permits there.
