I live in New York and am trying to increase my gun collection. Everything I have bought so far has been from a gun shop or at a gun show. I was wondering what was needed to make a legal gun sale from one person to another. Or if a relative gives you a gun. Or even in the worst case senerio that a gun was used in a crime and was passed from one person to another and now I have purchased it not knowing the history. Whats the best protocol? Make sure you have a signed receipt and maybe a copy of the persons drivers license that you bought it from? Any suggestions or ideas?
I think this is how it generall goes down, but NYC may be different if you live there. Some people don't or won't sign a bill of sale so make sure you know what you're getting into before you meet them. I've bought two firearms off of people and I've just handed them the cash or firearm I'm trading and we go on our ways.
Is it legal for me to sell a firearm to another person in Rochester?
No. The law bans selling, trading, or leasing firearms in Rochester, except through licensed
dealers, or persons surrendering firearms under the terms of State law. The ban also does
not apply to gifts or sales among family members, including bequests made pursuant to a
will.
