I am not finding any gun shops with a range & gun rental for the pistols I want to try out. I've found a lot of private ranges and some ranges that do not rent weapons plus ranges with very limited rentals. I've called upstate as well as some Jersey locations but a lot of them are closed on Sundays.
Where are people going to test out pistols?
I want to test out: Walther PPQ M2 9 mm, Sig p320 9 mm & Glock 22 40 cal.
I only know of one firearms dealer with a shooting range--Davis Sporting Goods in Goshen NY (Orange County). You would need to contact them first to ascertain whether they'll allow you to test fire prior to purchase.

Gun for Hire in NJ has rentals. Read their FAQ because they don't allow rentals to folks w/o permit by themselves. Need 2 people if you don't have a permit

Anyone with a state issued (FID) firearms ID card can rent alone anytime. Adult Male Shooters:
If you do not have a state issued (FID) firearms ID card You must bring another adult guest with you to be able to rent firearms. Adult Female Shooters:
You can rent firearms alone and do not need a firearms ID card. Just a drivers license or valid photo ID.

They do it for the risk of suicide believe it or not. I've called them and asked myself. Not the only rental/range I've heard of doing it for risk of suicide. I've been to Guns for Hire before. Closest public option to NYC that you can rent.

I found a few recent articles about men renting guns at NJ ranges and committing suicide.
One guy was at the range with his brother, not alone. I get it, although the rule seems like is a knee-jerk reaction to a suicide by a 21-year-old in September of that year and it didn't solve the problem since the brother committed suicide that December.

That is not the first range I have heard of that has such a rule. I guess women are much less likely to kill themselves with a rental gun at the range.
The business probably doesn't want to deal with the person leaving a mess. All that spent brass left for someone else to clean up.

Men and women tend to choose very different methods for suicide. Men tend to select instant and final methods - gunshot to the head, for example - whereas women tend to select slow and not-necessarily-final methods - swallowing a bunch of pills, for example.
Given that, women are probably much less likely to kill themselves with a rental gun at a range.
