Rochester’s Allstar Tactical LLC announced that it has been chosen to update the rifles used by the city police department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team.

ALLSTAR TACTICAL LLC. (Rochester, NY) has been chosen by the Rochester, NY Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for their rifle refresh. Several officers from the team have supplied information to Allstar Tactical to determine the exact requirements and specifications for their duty rifles. Once the details were worked out, the team at Allstar Tactical designed an upper receiver to fit their exact specifications.

Several premium parts were chosen from the Allstar Tactical catalog such as their Enhanced Bolt Carrier System, MFKR handguard system and Upper receiver, among other things.

In addition to building the new upper receivers for their weapon systems, Allstar Tactical will be performing a complete refresh on the lower halves of their rifles. Due to the length of time in service of these rifles, many parts in the lower halves of these rifles need to be replaced. Allstar Tactical will replace worn parts in order to provide a completely refreshed weapon system. They will also be adding a few upgrades to the lower receivers as well, including their new MFHB heavy buffer system. These new rifle systems are in production right now and will be put into service before the year’s end.

“We are extremely honored to be working with the Rochester SWAT team. I was born and raised in this area and it feels great to be able to help out our local law enforcement whenever possible” – Mike Centola, CEO, Allstar Tactical

SWAT Patches

Allstar Tactical builds many different custom rifle configurations for both civilian and LE use. Departments are able to customize their rifles to suit their individual needs. At the same time, the team at Allstar Tactical can make sure the officers are getting the best equipment for the job and the best bang for their buck.

“Being a police officer is becoming ever more dangerous by the day especially for Swat team members. Our team needs the most effective reliable tools to meet danger head on. That is why we chose Allstar Tactical to refurbish, rebuild and enhance our service rifles. We also wanted to partner with a member of the local Rochester community in order to focus on accomplishing the mission of the RPD SWAT team; to save lives.” – Lt. Aaron Springer, Rochester Police Department

AT-SAFEMOD-SALE

Allstar Tactical has just posted up on their blog that they are giving a 15% off discount on their SAFEMOD AR15 Compliance product.

I’m sure by now you have all read about the 2nd Circuit Decision in NYSRPA v. CUOMO. It’s unfortunate, but it’s not over. Furthermore, after reading Gov. Cuomo’s smug response to the decision, we have decided to offer a special 15% off sale on our SAFEMOD product through this weekend. Use coupon code THXCUOMO to get 15% off SAFEMODs and also get a FREE NYFirearms.com sticker as well as a FREE Allstar Tactical “Do You Even Pew Pew Pew Bro” sticker. Grab your SAFEMOD here.

The Allstar Tactical SAFEMOD is a mag button will modify your AR15 to no longer accept a detachable magazine and permanently affix an AR15 magazine in place. It works by preventing the button from being depressed once the magazine is inserted into the rifle. The SAFEMOD™ is made from aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum alloy and Type II anodized in matte black.

According to the NY SAFE ACT from the NYS Governor’s website on the SAFE ACT, “Rifles requiring registration are: Semiautomatic rifles capable of receiving a detachable magazines.” According to this definition of the law, but removing the capability of the rifle to receive “a detachable magazines” you no longer have to register the rifle and the banned features do not apply.

Remember, this is our interpretation of the law and we cannot be held responsible for a law enforcement official’s misinterpretation of the law or the legality of this product. We are working diligently to get word from the NYS Troopers that will assure us that this modification does in fact make your rifle legal.

Allstar Tactical SAFEMOD

Our friends over at Allstar Tactical have come out with a new options for your “assault rifles” in New York. They have introduced the “SAFEMOD” which permanently locks your magazine in place for your AR15-type rifle. Read the description from their website below:Allstar Tactical SAFEMOD

Introducing our in-house designed SAFEMOD™ mag button. This mag button will modify your AR15 to no longer accept a detachable magazine and permanently affix an AR15 magazine in place. It works by preventing the button from being depressed once the magazine is inserted into the rifle. The SAFEMOD™ is made from aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum alloy and Type II anodized in matte black.

Included with the SAFEMOD™ is a packet of epoxy to make the modification permanent. These are available for the reasonable price of $18, and for a limited time, you can add a second one for just $12 (2 for $30).

Installation is a snap. Just remove your old magazine release button and replace it with ours. Use the two included 18-8 stainless steel set screws and bottom them out into the button. Finally use the included epoxy to backfill in the holes. You now have an AR15 variant rifle that is no longer capable of accepting a detachable magazine.

This seems like it would be a great option for owners to not have to register their rifles or worry about the amount of “Evil Features.” Unfortunately, per their website, they have not received an official letter by the NY State Police.

Allstar Tactical SAFEMODAccording to the NY SAFE ACT from the NYS Governor’s website on the SAFE ACT, “Rifles requiring registration are: Semiautomatic rifles capable of receiving a detachable magazines.” According to this definition of the law, but removing the capability of the rifle to receive “a detachable magazines” you no longer have to register the rifle and the banned features do not apply.

We are working diligently to get word from the NYS Troopers that will assure us that this modification does in fact make your rifle legal.

At just $18, or 2 for $30, it’s worth taking a look at as an option for making your rifle legal in New York State. Check it out over on their website here: Allstar Tactical SAFEMOD Mag Button.

Article By Chris Fry / MDTS Training

We possess a number of ways to move in a combative environment and it is well documented that movement is a life saving tactic. Movement almost always helps us except maybe when attempting to engage a target with accurate gun fire. This guide will focus on the varied methods of vertical displacement taught in the MDTS level 1&2 course work. Vertical displacement in this context is movement along the vertical line or up and down through varied shooting positions. Vertical movement can aid us by making us a hard target when in a location where horizontal, forward or backward movement is inhibited, such as in a hallway. Vertical movement also aids us when attempting to establish a desired angle of fire or achieve maximum cover and/or concealment behind an object such as a vehicle, postal box or concrete Wal-Mart lamp piling in a parking lot.

Please note: This is meant to be a quick study guide not a treatise on positional shooting so adapt what is useful and discard what is not.

The following are (5) shooting positions along the vertical plane of movement:

This month we will be making some major changes to the site! In this post I’m going to outline some of these changes so you all know what to expect.

First, as you all have probably noticed we are growing like crazy! We’re about to tip the scales at almost 50,000+ visits per month. We are also averaging 40-50 online users at a time. Some users who are online regularly have noticed some performance issues as of late so we’re going to try to resolve this issue by moving the site to a virtual private server. This should help with any issues and give us a major boost in performance.

Next up, we’ve listened to everyones recommendations and we’re going to update the theme of the site to something fresh and hopefully easier on the eyes for everyone. With this we are also going to be updating the forum software to VB4. This should give us some more enhancements to the forums and hopefully fix any issues that we aren’t aware of.

Last, but certainly not least, we will be adding a huge amount of reviews to the site. From our trip to SHOT we were able to make some great contacts and we will be able to review products that might be otherwise unavailable. If you are a manufacturer or a trainer and would like us to review something for you, please feel free to contact us at [email protected].

Some of the products and services we will be reviewing are:

  • 4Sevens Flashlights
  • Allstar Tactical Enhanced Heavy Buffer
  • Allstar Tactical .22LR Conversion Kit
  • Cammo Brothers Mag Loader
  • Chamber Check Safety Devices
  • CMMG Takedown Upper
  • Inforce Flashlights

  • NovaTac Flashlights
  • Progressive F.O.R.C.E. Concepts PSOC Training
  • RPD Utah Permit Class
  • SOG Knives
  • Strikemark Reactive Targets

We’re also going to revive project AR-15! If you have any other ideas for us whether products to review or site suggestions, contact us or post in the forums!

The Kalashnikov RifleMikhail Kalashnikov

Without a doubt, you can not think of modern military small arms and not have the image of an AK-47 come to mind. For years, and still to this day, the AK was seen as a ‘commie gun’ or the rifle of terrorists and the proverbial ‘bad guy’. But, today in America you are just as likely to see and AK pattern rifle on the range as you are the American counterpart the AR.Watch movie online The Transporter Refueled (2015)

The AK quickly earned its way into the history books by becoming the most prolific small arm ever produced. There are several reasons for this that go beyond its simple, reliable and legendary rugged design, such as the use of the rights to produce AK’s as a diplomatic tool during the Cold War era. Perhaps this use of the AK by then Soviet Russia is why we have such an association with it being the weapon of the enemy, considering every foe America has faced since the Korean War was armed with some variant of the AK design I suppose this would be accurate.

The times have changed though, and with the collapse of the Soviet Union the American market has been flooded with various copies, some licensed, some not, of Mikhail’s original design – and Americans have been buying them.

In the years following the Vietnam War the AK was a novelty item and was limited to very few Class III versions, mainly Type-56 Chinese rifles that found their way from Vietnam. Oddly enough, actual Russian made AK’s were some of the last to make it to the American market. The Chinese were the initial venture capitalists to offer their versions. Companies like Polytech and Norinco introduced various models of the Type-56 to an eager market for many years up until the import ban of 89’ and the assault weapons ban of 1994 that banned both companies. It is important to note that there was a lot of controversy regarding the illegal importation of military arms during the Polytech and Norinco import years. The Chinese AK’s are still considered some of the finest AK’s ever offered to American consumers and are worth many times their initial back page of gun magazine prices of $175.00.

AK47

Unfortunately, though the market has opened up it also opened up to some AK’s of a lesser quality in the Post-Ban era. Everyone has heard horror stories of the quality of the WASR warhorse – some of which is earned but most of which is blown out of proportion. Most of the quality concerns of today’s AK’s are mainly an issue of importers such as Century International Arms (who seems to have no concerns over quality or end user safety when assembling their rifles). Most of today’s AK’s are imported into the states as a parts kit – that is that the receiver is cut and disassembled and reassembled on a new receiver sometimes using barrels and trunnions from different rifles. There in lies the biggest issue. Most AK’s based off of the AKM pattern feature a barrel that is pinned into the receiver and trunnion by two pins. Over use wear begins to develop and the holes in the trunnions will open-up more as well as wear of the barrel itself. This of course leads to wider groups and is translated as Minute of Milk Jug by the gun-pros.

So what is the best AK to get you may ask – your mileage may vary, but I have found the newly imported, and new production, Saiga rifles to be quit affordable and amazingly accurate compared to parts guns. In addition to being new, Saigas are also produced by the Izhmash company where Kalashnikov and his son continue to work as weapon designers. There are companies that sell converted, or modified, Saigas as well – such as Arsenal Inc. in Las Vegas, NV, Kreb’s Customs and Redstick to name a few. There are many that swear by the quality of Bulgarian AK’s and will argue till they are red in the face that milled receivers are inherently better and more accurate – that is not the case and it is important to note that the original design of the AK was to be used on a stamped receiver. The only thing a milled AK has over a stamped AK is weight to be honest.

So in the end with some many choices, like Romanian, Yugoslavian, Egyptian, Russian, Chinese, Bulgarian, Polish, Hungarian and American home grown, what’s best for you will be a matter of your own intended use and personal likes and dislikes – but know that when it comes to choosing an AK, there is no wrong choice.

I recently took the opportunity to train in Camden, TN with Tactical Response in their Fighting Rifle classes. I took down a rifle with the new trigger from Allstar Tactical for evaluation. The trigger itself appears to be very well manufactured and has a competition trigger feel with a smooth comfortable trigger face and modernized design. The trigger breaks crisp @ a bit over 6lbs and almost zero creep.

I took the time to make sure the rifle was sighted at my home range before going to the class and found the trigger very nice off my bench for the 30 or so rounds I sent downrange to verify consistent zero. After cleaning the rifle up I cased her up and off to Camden,TN.

The Tactical Response classes are round count intensive with a touch over 1500rnds in two days. The trigger performed perfectly, allowing me accurate fire and fast follow up in a combat style shooting atmosphere. One thing I really began to appreciate the trigger for was the smooth (maybe a touch wider than usual) trigger shoe face. After the first 700rnds several people not wearing gloves began to develop a sore spot on their trigger fingers along with fatigue in their hands. The trigger from Allstar offered me a much more comfortable purchase on the trigger itself and the minimal amount of movement and rapid reset curbed both fatigue and any type of blistering.

The second day the trigger was put into one of my light weight carbines as the rifle the fine people at Allstar sent me with was a bit heavy. It worked flawlessly in my carbine as well, rounding out with a touch under 1k rounds that day. I had several very fast very high round evolutions and the trigger was fantastic. I found the trigger really lent itself to rapid follow up shots with a clean fast reset.

Having had numerous trigger designs from several manufacturers I feel this trigger is well worth the cost. It offers a combination of single and double stage attributes that give it a distinct advantage over many. This single stage trigger offers an excellent break and fast reset two things that are greatly appreciated by competition shooters looking to squeeze every bit of accuracy out of their weapons. It also offers the reliability and safety that combat style shooters need, giving it a “best of both worlds” feel. As I understand it, there is a possibility that Allstar can lighten the trigger pull for a nominal fee which would make this a great three gun trigger if combat style shooting/training isn’t your thing.

After returning home I took the time to put the lower assembly from Allstar onto a Compass Lake Engineering NM A2 upper I have used for competitions like CMP. This upper will shoot far better than I can and really gave me the chance to see how the trigger would be on a true competition setup. My results were outstanding at 100yrds for a single stage battle trigger. The trigger consistently allowed me to hold groups of 5 rounds in a two inch or less group with irons off a bench with standard 62gr M855 ammunition.

I can honestly say I will be investing in a couple of these for my own personal weapons. I can’t thank Mike at Allstar enough for letting me try out their new trigger, it was fantastic and I’m looking forward to putting them in my own rifles.

When I heard they were going to be releasing a Gas Piston rifle, I needed to get my hands on one to review. Well, thanks to Allstar Tactical, one of our site sponsors, I was able to borrow a Model 8 rifle to check out and review.

Stag Model 8 AR-15

The direct gas system of a typical AR-15 rifle has worked well for decades, but it has is drawbacks with reliability and cleaning. The gas tube can become clogged from carbon buildup, especially when used with lower quality ammunition. Many manufacturers have answered this call with a gas piston system, which is exactly what it describes; the action moves based on the gas transferring its energy to a piston, which, in turn, moves the bolt rearward.

There are several other manufacturers of Gas Piston AR-15 rifles, but many of them are fairly pricey and extend upwards of $2000. The Stag Arms Model 8, with it’s MSRP of $1145, comes in a great price-point, and definitely competes very well in the market.

The gas-piston system on the Model 8 is actually quite simple. Gas bleeds off through a hole in the barrel, through the regulator, actuating the piston which pushes the bolt carrier back, cycling the action. There is a spring in the forward section of the piston system which keeps the piston in the forward position until the rifle is fired. The regulator also has two positions, ON and OFF. The ON position allows the rifle to function normally, while the OFF position will allow the rifle to fire, but will not cycle the action. This system is considered a short-stroke gas piston system.

Besides the enhancement of the gas-piston system, the Stag Model 8 is everything you would expect in an AR-15 rifle. From standard carbine handguards to a forward assist A3 upper receiver, this rifle is ready to go right out of the box. Another great benefit of this rifle for us NY residents is that it can be ordered right from the factory as a NY-compliant AR-15 rifle. In fact, the one that Allstar Tactical lent us was already NY-compliant. The benefit of this is that there is no extra costs for pinning the stock or the muzzle brake.

Another great feature for the Model 8 is that it comes with a pair of $200 flip-up iron sights from Midwest Industries. Midwest industries is highly regarded for their Back Up Iron Sights (BUIS) and other AR-15 accessories. Including these with the rifle only makes the price-point of the Model 8 that much more attractive!

We tested the rifle with 55gr Armscor 5.56 surplus Ammo, also donated by Allstar Tactical, and found that every round fired flawlessly.  No failure-to-feed’s, no failure-to-eject’s, and certainly no jams of any sort. I was also very surprised at the accuracy of the rifle, even when using surplus ammunition. I was able to average 3-4″ groups at 50 yrds using iron sights, and I’m not that great of a shot!

Stag Model 8 AR-15

So, great accuracy and ridiculous reliability combined with an MSRP under $1150 produces the Stag Arms Model 8 Gas Piston rifle, an AR-15 for the masses. Manufactured in the USA (Connecticut), the Model 8 also comes in a hard plastic case, and carries Stag Arms’ standard warranty. I would have to say that I definitely recommend this rifle to anyone looking for a gas-piston AR-15 and doesn’t want to break the bank!

NYFirearms.com was founded in 2008 by Mike Centola and Jeff Wiedrick as a response to a lack of discussion forums for New York State firearms owners. Originally the intent was solely for a discussion forum, but it quickly developed into an extremely informative blog-based site, incorporating firearms news, reviews, and events.
