    Default I got a coupon!

Santa left me a coupon for a muzzleloader up to $500 and I need some advice.
Never shot black powder before; is there any particular brand/make I should AVOID?
If I can get one for around $300, I'll probably pick up another Mosin Nagant as well.

Here's the coupon, what should I get?

T/C Omaga .50cal great shooting gun and very reliable. I shoot .50 cal .245 gr hp power belt bullets with 100gr triple 7 powder for a great deer load.I hear T/C has a great warranty policy but have never needed to use it.

I see this post is a bit old, but I'll add my 2 bits.

Erie county is close to PA. They have a January Flintlock season. Keep that in mind.

For $500 you can buy a lyman great plain rifle is 50 cal flintlock. Don't let other fool you otherwise. Flintlocks with a good flint, clean and maintained parts, and quality powder can be extremely reliable. They also make a deerstalker, which is a touch cheaper. They also sell the gun in kit form. An easy thing to put together too. It's all there, just need to assemble, sand, finish, and brown the metal parts. Again very easy to do and you end up with something you made yourself. Point and aim upto yards dead deer. All you need anyways.

Traditions makes an affordable flintlock too.

Modern arms CVA accura is good. Thomspon is good too, but not for what they charge. I got mine on clearance when they briefly stopped selling the SS omega in favor of the nickel coated barrel. Otherwise, I would of went with a CVA.

However, I make it an annual vacation to flintlock hunt in PA now. Glad I did.
